Italy is world-leading in science and technology in the field of environmental protection. In recent years, investment in green products and technologies in Italian industry and services has been growing even more rapidly. A study by University of Oxford found that, Italy ranked second in the Green Complexity Index, for the number of environmental patent applications, low CO2 emissions and strict environmental policies.

Ever since the 3rd CIIE, the technology and equipment zone has added a special area for energy saving and environmental protection. On November 5, 2021, the 4th CIIE has begun in Shanghai. The theme of the special area is “low-carbon development, green recovery”, with an exhibition area of over 11,000 square meters.

Six leading environmental enterprises from Italy showed in an Italian Pavilion organized by the Italian Trade Agency, striving to meet China’s environmental protection market demand while helping achieve China’s goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality as soon as possible.

In order to jointly solve the global climate problem and assume the responsibility of a great power, China proposed the goal of “striving to reach the peak of carbon emissions by 2030 and making efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060” in September 2020, which also presents the direction for China to achieve the development path of green environment protection.

While Italy has made sustainability a strategic asset for the future manufacturing, there has been a long history of cooperation between China and Italy in the field of environmental protection.

In fact, in 2000 a Joint Statement on environmental protection collaboration signed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China (MEP) and the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS), launched the Sino-Italian Cooperation Program for Environmental Protection (SICP).

Over the years, Italy has played an important role in many projects of environmental management in China. Italy is the fifth global exporter of environmental goods, with a share of 4%.Over the last few years, China has been one of the most active and dynamic countries in the field and among the best destination for Italian export of environmental goods and services. The sales of Italian products related to the environment did not decline even in 2020, reaching a +10.5% towards China. Data available for the first seven months of 2021 show an even higher increase of more then 58%. (Source: ISTAT – Italian national institution of Statistics).

Augusto Di Giacinto, Trade Commissioner of ITA (Italian Trade Agency) Shanghai Office says that: “Eco-environmental protection opportunities and challenges coexist, especially in the Chinese market. 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of the People’s Republic of China and the Outline of Vision 2035 has pointed out that it is necessary to promote green development and the harmonious coexistence of human and nature. We are particularly proud to present the Italian Pavilion of Environmental Technology at CIIE, exactly in the same days of the COP-26 2021, which is running in Glasgow from October 31st to November 12th. We like to believe that presenting at CIIE a pavilion about Environmental Technologies, showcasing the Italian Excellences in the field, is the perfect symbolic link between East and West to reach the goal to unite the world tackle climate change, together.

Italy has been actively thinking and fruitfully exploring for many years in enhancing the quality and stability of the ecosystem, continuously improving the quality of the environment, and accelerating the green transformation of the development mode. The exhibition of Italian environmental brands will certainly provide advanced technologies and solutions for the completion of the positive development in the green transformation of China’s high energy-consuming and high-emission projects and play a key role in the growth of economic competitiveness”.

The Italian exhibition group participating in the CIIE, still with the concept of conforming to China’s sustainable development, showed Italy’s high level of manufacturing capacity and innovative technology in the field of environmental protection.
